Motorhome service area, parking area or campsite: which should you choose?

What is the difference between a service area and a parking area?

A motorhome service area provides facilities such as water filling or wastewater disposal, depending on its equipment. A motorhome parking area accommodates vehicles under the conditions set by the operator. Some places combine both; others do not. A service unit alone therefore does not establish that overnight stays are allowed.

A campsite is another type of overnight stop, with pitches and services to check with the establishment. Start with your needs: using a service, stopping for a few hours, spending the night or accessing toilets and showers. The name of a place does not answer all these questions.

Service areas: check each facility separately

A service area may provide water, grey-water disposal, toilet emptying or only some of these. Access may be free, paid, reserved for customers or restricted to certain hours. Payment methods and the connections needed also vary.

  • Water: check the drinking-water information, the designated filling point and conditions of use.
  • Grey water: identify the designated disposal facility and check that the vehicle can be positioned correctly.
  • Toilets: use the facility suitable for the toilet system; do not confuse rinsing points with water intended for drinking.
  • Access: check opening times, payment and any seasonal restrictions.

Our water, shower and wastewater disposal guide explains these checks. A symbol in a listing helps locate equipment but does not guarantee that it will be working when you arrive.

Motorhome parking: check the overnight conditions

To spend the night, check that the conditions permit it, along with the maximum stay, opening times and accepted vehicle categories. Also check pitch size, ground conditions and access. A parking area may allow parking without providing showers, toilets or electricity.

Do not infer camping rules simply from permission to park. Outdoor equipment, access to services and use of shared spaces depend on site instructions. Read the signs and the operator’s information.

For further checks, read our method for choosing an overnight campervan spot. It helps compare access, recent information and an alternative in case of closure or no available space.

Campsites: choose according to the services actually provided

A campsite can be useful when you need a pitch, toilets and washing facilities, and time to rest on site. Check what the price includes: electricity, showers, vehicle services or late arrival may have different conditions at each establishment.

Also check opening dates, booking requirements, reception hours and access for your vehicle. The word “campsite” alone does not establish the level of equipment. If a service is essential, ask for confirmation before booking.

For a first campervan weekend, a managed place with clear conditions can make planning easier. This depends on your needs; it is not a requirement to choose one type of accommodation every time.

Choose your stop with three questions

  • Do I need a facility or an overnight pitch? Distinguish a one-off service stop from an overnight stay.
  • Which facilities are essential today? Check availability and conditions, not just their presence on a map.
  • What will I do if the site is closed or full? Find an alternative compatible with your vehicle and remaining supplies.

For example, you could empty wastewater at one place and then travel to an authorised overnight stop elsewhere. Conversely, if you need a shower and electricity, a stop combining both can avoid extra trips. These examples describe a way to choose, not services guaranteed at every area.

Compare places and nearby services in the app

VanSpot Finder lets you view spot listings and nearby services with their distances (in French). This helps distinguish equipment at your stop from facilities that require another journey. Then check actual access and opening times.

For a journey with several overnight stops, use our guide to planning a campervan road trip. Linking services to overnight stops rather than searching separately at the last minute leaves more flexibility.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sleep at a motorhome service area?

Only if the site conditions permit overnight parking. Water or a wastewater unit alone does not establish this. Read the signs or ask the operator.

Are motorhome service and parking areas always free?

No. Parking, services or both may be charged. Check the price, payment conditions and included services before entering.

Does a motorhome parking area always have toilets?

No. It may provide parking only. Check the facilities and their access conditions, particularly if the vehicle has no toilet.
