How to plan a campervan road trip: route, stops and services

Where should you start when planning a campervan road trip?

To plan a campervan road trip, first choose an area and duration, then distribute visits, overnight stops and service stops. The route should account for the vehicle and your pace, not just kilometres. Scenic roads, narrow access and searching for parking can change the time available.

Separate essentials from optional activities. A booked activity or ferry has a timetable; a walk can often move to another day. This distinction lets you adapt without recalculating the entire trip after a delay.

Build each day around three types of stop

  • A visit or activity: what you want to discover and how much time you want to spend there.
  • A service: water, wastewater disposal, toilets, shopping or charging, depending on the vehicle’s equipment.
  • An overnight stop: somewhere you can park for the night under the permitted conditions.

One place may meet several needs, but not always. A wastewater disposal point may be usable during the day without allowing overnight stays. Our guide to service areas, motorhome parking and campsites helps avoid this confusion.

Schedule services with fixed opening hours before flexible activities. If you need water before the evening, do not postpone the search until after the only identified facility has closed.

Choose overnight stops without fixing the whole trip

For each area, keep a main option and an accessible alternative. Check opening times, restrictions, ground conditions and recent information. A place on a map is neither a booking nor confirmation that it is open.

Our guide to choosing a campervan overnight spot explains what to consider. For a late stop at a managed site, ask about arrival arrangements. In a busy area, also check whether booking or early arrival is needed.

Allow enough flexibility to change stops. A plan that forces you to drive tired to reach the last available pitch is difficult to maintain. Search for and check places while parked, or ask a passenger to do the planning.

An example of organising three days

This example illustrates a method without promising open services or prescribing a destination. Choose times and distances to suit your area.

  • Day 1: reach the first area, visit somewhere nearby and settle at an overnight stop whose conditions you have checked.
  • Day 2: use the priority service in the morning if needed, spend the rest of the day on an activity, then reach your main overnight stop or backup option.
  • Day 3: keep one short activity and the packing-away tasks needed before returning, with time for unexpected delays.

For a first trip, you can also start with our first campervan weekend checklist. It helps check the equipment before planning longer driving days.

Find spots along your route with VanSpot Finder

VanSpot Finder Plus searches for spots and services along a route (in French), helping you examine stops along a journey. It complements a search around one place when you are choosing between areas. Then check listings and nearby services to choose stops that meet your needs.

This search does not replace navigation that accounts for vehicle dimensions. Check height restrictions, access, other restrictions and manoeuvring space. A spot appearing along a route does not establish that every access road is suitable.

Compare tools by purpose in our campervan and motorhome app guide. Check offers, features and connection requirements before departure.

Prepare for areas with a weak connection

Before leaving an area with good coverage, note useful contact details and opening times and save the practical information you need. A screenshot of a listing or a note does not replace an offline map, navigation or updated restrictions.

Do not assume an app works fully offline because it has already displayed a map. VanSpot Finder does not currently offer offline map downloads. Prepare navigation with a tool that explicitly describes this feature and test downloads before departure.

On arrival, check signs and the conditions you observe. Your planned route supports decisions; it does not oblige you to keep an overnight stop that has become unsuitable.

Frequently asked questions

How many kilometres should I plan per day in a campervan?

There is no distance suitable for every journey. Consider driving time, roads, visits, tiredness and service stops. Leave some spare time rather than filling the whole day.

Is route searching the same as motorhome GPS navigation?

No. It helps identify stops along a journey. Driving directions and whether vehicle dimensions are considered depend on the navigation tool and its settings.

Does VanSpot Finder offer offline maps?

Not currently. Prepare useful information before entering areas with poor coverage and check your navigation tool’s offline features.
