Where can you empty motorhome wastewater?

Wastewater from a motorhome or converted van must be emptied at a facility intended for that type of waste, at a service area, campsite or another site whose operator offers the service. Check separately for a grey-water point and a facility suitable for toilets. A ground drain alone does not identify an authorised wastewater disposal point.

Before choosing your stop, check the facilities and conditions. An “area” may simply offer parking without services: our guide to service areas, motorhome parking and campsites explains the difference.

What is the difference between grey water and black water?

Grey water comes from the vehicle’s kitchen sink, washbasin or shower. It contains washing residues and is different from rainwater. The disposal point must be intended for this use and compatible with the vehicle’s system.

Black water means wastewater and waste from toilets. Depending on the equipment, it is collected in a removable cassette or another tank. Dry or separating toilets have different instructions: do not automatically apply a cassette procedure to another system.

  • Grey water: use the facility designated for kitchen sink, washbasin or shower wastewater.
  • Toilet cassette: use the designated toilet-waste point and follow the equipment instructions.
  • Other toilet systems: check the manual and ask the operator which facility is suitable.

Plan your stop before the tanks are full

Check tank levels using the vehicle’s equipment and plan your stop early enough. If you hire a vehicle, ask for a demonstration of the controls, cassette removal and equipment storage at handover. Instructions for the actual model are more useful than a generic procedure found online.

In VanSpot Finder, find the services around your spot (in French) and open their listings. Check that the service matches your needs: drinking-water filling and wastewater disposal are not interchangeable. Note access, any opening times, payment conditions and an alternative. Listing information can change.

On a multi-day trip, plan these stops between the overnight stops of your campervan road trip rather than waiting until the end of the day. A point close in a straight line may involve a detour or access unsuitable for your vehicle’s dimensions.

At the service area: a checklist for using the right facility

  • Read the service area instructions and identify the point intended for the wastewater you need to empty.
  • Park within the markings, secure the vehicle and keep circulation areas clear.
  • Use the controls and accessories specified by the manufacturer; do not improvise connections or position yourself underneath the vehicle.
  • For a cassette, follow its manual and use the designated disposal point without splashing the facilities.
  • Rinse only with the equipment and tap reserved for that purpose, following the site instructions.
  • Close tank openings and valves, store toilet equipment separately and leave the facility clean.

If a service unit is blocked, closed or incompatible with your equipment, do not force its use. Tell the operator and use another facility. A service being paid for or shown on a map does not guarantee that it is working when you arrive.

Keep wastewater disposal and drinking-water filling separate

Wastewater equipment and filling equipment must remain separate. A cassette-rinsing tap does not become a filling point because it is easy to reach. For water intended for drinking, see our guide to finding drinking water and filling your tank.

Do not use a manhole, street drain or patch of ground instead of an identified facility. You may not know where the drainage system leads or whether the point is authorised for this use. Even with a product described as environmentally friendly, vehicle wastewater must go into the appropriate facility in accordance with the site instructions.

For toilet products and maintenance, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the site conditions. There is no universal dose here: it depends on the equipment and product used.

Useful sources and manuals

Frequently asked questions

Can I empty grey water into a street drain?

A street drain does not establish that a point is intended for grey-water disposal. Use an identified grey-water facility and follow the operator’s instructions.

Are grey water and toilet cassettes emptied at the same point?

Not necessarily. A service area may have separate facilities. Read the instructions to choose the point suitable for each tank.

Does a motorhome parking area always have wastewater disposal?

No. It may offer parking only. Check whether wastewater disposal is available, its conditions and whether it is working before travelling there.

Can I use a rinsing hose to fill my clean-water tank?

Do not use equipment reserved for toilet rinsing to fill a tank intended for drinking water. Identify an authorised filling point and prepare separate, suitable equipment.
